A/R: 1000 maternal deaths recorded between 2020 and 2024.

Maternal mortality in Ashanti region

According to the Ghana Health Service(GHS) has revealed that 1,000 women lost their lives tragically during childbirth between 2020 and 2024.

The Regional Health Director, Dr. Frank Adomako Boateng made this revelation while speaking at the Regional Health Forum, and also emphasised the need for stronger interventions to deal with high maternal mortality rate.

Despite various strategies and plans to improve on maternal healthcare, the numbers are evidence to the insufficiency of the policies and strategies.

Dr. Boateng emphasized the region’s difficulty in meeting the Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) target of reducing maternal mortality to 70 deaths per 100,000 live births by 2030.

He pointed out that current statistics show the region is falling short and must accelerate efforts to close the gap within the next six years.
