Parliament has approved a budget of GHS 838,369,865 for the Audit Service to carry out its mandate for the 2025 financial year. The motion was moved in the house today and approved after deliberations.
Audit Service Mandate and 2024 Performance
The Audit Service is responsible for auditing all public accounts and funds, including constitutional and statutory institutions, in line with the Audit Service Act. Additionally, it oversees the effective implementation of the country’s Assets Declaration Regime.
In 2024, the Audit Service completed 6,181 audits by the end of December. The service was allocated GHS 633,740,507. For the 2025 financial year, the Audit Service has outlined plans to conduct 5,330 audits nationwide.
Despite its mandate, the Audit Service faces critical infrastructure challenges. It is mandated to operate in all 261 administrative districts across the country but currently has offices in only 98 districts. Some of these offices operate from rented premises or spaces provided by district and municipal assemblies. Supporting the move for the disbursement of funds for the audit service, Hon. Abena Osei Asare, emphasized the importance of increasing capital expenditure to facilitate the establishment of independent and well-equipped offices.
She said increasing their capital expenditure would make them independent and fit for purpose.
The Audit Service plans to audit five Ghana Armed Forces peacekeeping operations abroad in 2025. The last audit of these peacekeeping missions was conducted in 2019.
With the approved budget, the Audit Service is expected to enhance its operations, strengthen financial oversight, and improve accountability within public institutions across the country.
